Transcript: Dangers Of Elevated Liver Enzymes I’m doing this video because a close relative because a close relative got news that her liver enzyme levels had become elevated to a point of concern for her doctor. I didn’t know much about the dangers of elevated liver enzymes so I started doing a lot of reading on reputable medical websites like these, and in this short video I’ll share some key points I’ve learned. There can be significant liver damage before any signs or symptoms of trouble begin to appear. Checking for high liver enzymes can help your doctor make a diagnosis sooner, and that’s always a good thing. There are literally thousands of enzymes in your liver that help regulate your health by synthesizing proteins, storing of glucose and certain vitamins. Your liver also metabolizes carbohydrates, filters toxic materials which can damage the body, and produces substances that break fats down. When some of these enzymes accumulate at elevated levels, it’s a sign that something is wrong. Elevated liver enzymes usually mean the liver isn’t functioning properly and is being damaged. Such damage could include forms of hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, liver cancer, hemochromatosis, mononucleosis, Wilson’s disease and autoimmune disorders of the liver and bile ducts. Diabetes is a frequent cause of elevated liver enzymes. Poor lifestyle choices can make a difference too. Drinking too much alcohol and overusing certain drugs and medications have a negative impact on your liver. Certain herbal supplements may also damage liver health if used carelessly. It’s not widely known that obesity can cause elevated liver enzymes. Individuals with obesity often have a condition known as fatty liver disease. When you have fatty liver disease, fat deposits accumulate in the liver and eventually cause inflammation and swelling. If you have elevated liver enzymes, you’ll usually need specific tests to determine exactly what’s wrong. These tests could be an MRI, biopsy, ultrasound, CT scan, and liver blood tests.
