Visit: http://www.urologysanantonio.com This animation sequence shows how a penile prosthesis device works. A penile prosthesis or penile implant is a surgical treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction. It is appropriate for men whose impotence is not treatable by less invasive solutions such as medication or men who opt not to use more conservative therapies such as pills (Viagra, Levitra, Cilias), MUSE tablets or tri-mix penile injections. A penile implant is placed surgically by a urologist. Dr. LeRoy Jones at Urology San Antonio performs this procedure and is one of the most experienced penile implant surgeons in the world based on the number of surgical cases performed. The operation to implant the device takes less than an hour, and the patient goes home the same day. Eight weeks after the surgery, the man returns to the urologists office where he is taught how to activate the device. As this video shows, to create an erection, the man squeezes a marble-sized pump located in the scrotum between the testis. Squeezing the pump causes the two cylinders located in the penis to fill with saline or salt water and create an erection. Unlike with vacuum constriction devices, the penis remains warm and is erect enough for intercourse. The sexual sensation when using a penile implant is not altered and a man can reach climax or orgasm as usual. After the man and his partner are satisfied, the man can deflate the device by pressing a release valve located on the pump, returning the penis to a flaccid state. The penile implant device is totally concealed within the body, and no one can tell by looking at the man naked that he has a penile implant. The penile implant was invited in the 1970s by a urologist at Baylor College of Medicine.Urologists have provided this erectile dysfunction treatment to men for decades; however, the penile implant is not well known among the general public and even among primary care physicians. Urologists who do not perform the penile implant surgery sometime neglect to suggest such a solution to men whose ED is not cured otherwise. Patient and partner satisfaction rates for the penile implant are extremely high (85 to 95 percent) as documented in the medical literature. American Medical Systems (part of endo) manufactures one brand of penile implants. AMS’ 700 model is shown in this video. This video is copyright of AMS/endo and is posted with permission.
