Transcript: Thyroid Problems – Foods To Eat Foods to Avoid I’m doing this video because someone in my family has been fighting thyroid problems for years, so I’ve learned a lot about the thyroid, mainly by reading and research on reliable medical websites like these. I’ll share some basics on thyroid problems and diet in the next minute or so. The reasons for thyroid problems are many and varied. But this video focuses strictly on foods you should eat and foods you should avoid if you have thyroid issues, especially hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism, also known as low thyroid or underactive thyroid, tends be influenced more by what you eat – or don’t eat. But hyperthyroidism, also called high thyroid or overactive thyroid, also responds to certain general diet guidelines. A healthy thyroid diet plan is often rich in protein. You should also make sure your diet includes iodized salt, sea salt, fresh fish, fish oil, sea weeds/kelp, eggs, and certain kinds of cheese. Also beneficial are green leafy vegetables, and foods that contain a lot of fatty acids, such as almonds, walnuts, whole grains, lean meat, milk and egg whites. Look for foods with selenium in them. Selenium is rich in anti-oxidants, anti-aging and anti-cancer enzymes. Rice, corn and wheat, Brazil nuts, onions, oats, garlic, and soybeans are high in selenium. Chicken, beef and certain kinds of fish contain selenium too. Certain vitamins promote thyroid health: vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Foods that supply these vitamins are bananas, bok choy, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, egg yolks, figs, oranges, and spinach, It’s especially important for anyone suffering from hypothyroidism to avoid certain foods. One the “avoid” list are * sugar, * junk food and fast food (especially fried fast food), * vegetables like cauliflower and mustard that contain high amount of iron. * all beverages containing alcohol. As always, your doctor is your best source of information about what to eat and what to avoid if you have thyroid problems.
