In this video I discuss the major functions of water in the body. I also discuss how water is a lubricant, and how water is a nutrient. I cover the fact that sweat is water, and that water is essential for life. Transcript (partial) Functions of water in the body. Water is an essential nutrient for the body, as the body loses water through perspiration, breathing, bowel movements, and in urine. Water must be consumed regularly to maintain a sufficient level. Water has many vital functions in the body, including… Serving as a lubricant. Water is a main component of saliva, which helps moisten food making it easier to swallow. Water also helps lubricate joints, reducing friction and inflammation. Water is important in body temperature regulation. When body heat rises, such as during strenuous activities, the body starts to sweat to cool itself. And sweat is made up almost entirely of water. Water is a major component of blood, which transports nutrients and helps remove waste substances from all parts of the body. Water helps keep tissues moist, such as the eyes, nose and throat, enabling them to function properly. The kidneys and liver use water to remove toxins and other waste products, water helps hydrate muscles, it helps soften stool, which can help reduce constipation, and it helps skin from drying and cracking. And, I could go on and on and on, but, as you can see, water is a vital nutrient for life. And those are the major functions of water in the body.
