It is important that our thyroids are working and functioning properly since they regulate both hormone production and metabolism. A proper functioning thyroid is therefore important to maintain good overall health. There are foods you can eat to help support your thyroid’s functioning, but you will want to discuss further treatments with your medical practitioner as well. Lets discuss these foods that can support and improve thyroid function. 1. Seaweed can be especially beneficial for your thyroid. This is because most sea vegetables, especially seaweed, are great sources of iodine. Low levels of iodine in the body may be detrimental to overall thyroid health and its ability to secret necessary hormones. It is also a great source of potassium and protein. Most seaweed varieties are good sources of iodine. 2. Brazil nuts are also good for thyroid function. This is because they are a rich source of the nutrient selenium. Selenium helps regulate thyroid hormones and promotes the overall health of are thyroid. It may also help to prevent thyroid tissue damage and long-term damage for those individuals with thyroid related issues. 3. Dairy products can also help. This includes foods such as eggs, milk and yogurt. The consumption of these foods can help contribute to healthy iodine levels in the body. A single egg can offer nearly 16% of the recommended daily value of iodine. As well, dairy products such as low fat milk and yogurt contain other nutrients that promote the overall health of our bodies, such as vitamin D. 4. Coconut oil has long been used as a healing food. It is an excellent food source for our health and importantly, for our thyroid as well. Coconut oil contains essential fatty acids, which are needed for proper metabolic function. As well, these healthy fatty acids are incorporated easily by the body and contribute to both healthy thyroid function and thyroid hormone production. Coconut oil can also help regulate the metabolism. 5. Fish are another healthy food source for our thyroid. Many varieties are helpful in this regard, such as cod and haddock. Fish are a good source of thyroid healthy iodine. They also provide other vitamin, minerals and nutrients that provide adequate nutrition to our bodies and promote healthy thyroid function and overall health. This includes omega-3 fatty acids which promote overall health and the health of our hearts. 6. Lastly, beans can improve thyroid function. Varieties such as lima and pinto beans are a great source of selenium. Just one cup of cooked beans can provide about 19% of your recommended daily value of selenium. Beans are also a good source of zinc and iron, as well as B vitamins, vitamin C, fibre and healthy proteins. Please note that too much iodine and selenium can be detrimental to your body and health as well.
