For young patients with rare neurodegenerative genetic disorders, access to timely and comprehensive medical treatment is often a challenge due to proximity of services, available expertise, and other factors. However, the Program for the Study of Neurodevelopment in Rare Disorders at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is working to improve access for patients and families. Maria Escolar, MD, director of the program, explains how clinical service, research, and training are the three cornerstones of the program, which is tracking and caring for more than 700 patients with rare neurodevelopmental disorders.
