Hip injuries are often debilitating for both recreational and professional athletes. Traditionally, these injuries have been under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed largely due to operative complications and the elevated risk of open hip surgery. However, hip arthroscopy is a newer and less invasive option, and is the most rapidly growing field within orthopaedic surgery. Dharmesh Vyas, MD, PhD, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at UPMC, discusses the recent trends, expanding indications, technique enhancements, and ongoing research of hip arthroscopy for sports injuries.
