Finasteride, the active ingredient in the brand names Propecia and Proscar, is a medication used to treat and slow down male pattern baldness. It works by blocking the chemical DHT which causes hair follicles to shrink and die. DHT initiates the start of puberty in boys and causes the genitals to develop and the growth of pubic and body hair.more importantly, it causes the prostate to grow during puberty. Finasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone into DHT, and may cause abnormalities in the external genitalia of a male fetus if finasteride is exposed. First off, finasteride is NOT approved for use in women to treat hair loss. A study was done on pregnant monkeys who were given large doses of finasteride by mouth, and had resulted in male offspring with abnormalities of the sex organs. Pregnant rats were also given finasteride and the results showed that it increased the risk of pre-term birth and impaired cognitive functioning in newborns. The defect causes the opening of the urinary tract to appear on the underside of the penis when it should actually be at the tip. Due to the complications of genital detects in male babies, women are warned against touching broken or crushed tablets of Propecia, as there is the remote possiblity that they may absorb some of the active ingredient into their system. To guard against this issue, the tablets have a coating on them. However, some people do cut up 5mg of Proscar into 1.25 mg tablets, so taking caution when doing this around pregnant women is highly recommended. If you do cut Proscar or Propecia tablets, make sure you don’t use the same cup as your girlfriend/wife as the residue can come into contact. Although highly unlikely, theoretically, there is a risk of birth defect in a male baby’s sex organs in a couple has intercourse during the stage of pregnancy when the sex organs are developing as traces of finasteride can be found in small amounts in semen. After birth of the baby, finasteride should not be used if the baby is breastfed as finasteride can also be absorbed by the mother and passed onto the baby through breastfeeding.
