Osteoporosis itself has no symptoms; its main consequence is increased risk of bone fractures. Therefore, the clinical manifestations of osteoporosis depend on which bones are involved.Vertebral fractures that frequently occur in the thoracic and lumbar regions are painful. Multiple fractures can cause significant loss of height and various deformities, including lumbar lordosis and kyphoscoliosis. Complications of fractures of the femoral neck, pelvis, or spine, include pulmonary embolism and pneumonia, which also occur frequently in osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is difficult to diagnose, since it often produces no symptoms until late in the disease when bones are very fragile.
