High cholesterol value in the blood is one of the reversible and treatable cause for coronary heart disease. Normally the cholesterol values are evaluated by a test called lipid profile wherein various fractions of the cholesterol are estimated. A fasting sample is usually done and the blood cholesterol value more than 200 mgs and LDL value more than 140 mgs and triglyceride value more than 200 is taken as a high value of the risk factor. Another factor is HDL cholesterol. It should be more than 40 mgs. Then it is considered as beneficial in preventing the coronary heart disease. Otherwise you can call it as good cholesterol. The cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides are considered as bad lipid profile. So we need to do a blood testing and only then we will come to know about the lipid profile pattern. If it is in the abnormal values treatment will be in the form of diet wherein we have to avoid high fat diet like milk cream, non vegetarian food like red meat and ghee, butter etc. Once you take care of the weight and restriction of fat in your diet and regular exercise should bring back lipid profile to a normal pattern. If it is not medicines have to be initiated. Most important medicines are statins. There are various types of statins available. They are atorvastatin, rosuvastatin etc. But especially a person who has elevated the cholesterol values and abnormal lipid profile and if the person is having either diabetes or hypertension or smoker this has to be viewed very strictly and seriously and treatment has to be initiated.
