Watch as Parents Magazine shows when to worry about jaundice! If your beautiful new baby is looking a little yellow, there’s no need to panic. It’s probably jaundice, a common condition among newborns. Jaundice symptoms occur when your baby’s liver doesn’t properly remove bilirubin, the waste product from red blood cells. Your little one’s body is still developing. If you’re concerned about jaundice in babies, there are three steps you should take. First, check your baby’s eyes, where jaundice symptoms typically begin. Feed your baby as much as possible to help support liver function. Lastly, ask your doctor to examine your baby for jaundice at the first check-up–three to five days after birth. This is also the time jaundice usually peaks. A blood test can determine if further care is necessary. If your child has a yellowish cast and is sleepy or not feeding well, see a doctor right away. Left untreated, severe jaundice can cause brain damage, but it’s very rare. Luckily, jaundice in infants is an easily treated occurrence in newborn care!
