The Latissimus Dorsi is a LARGE pulling muscle which play a huge role in extending, internally rotating, and adducting your gleno-humeral joint. Tight Lat’s often manifest in an internally rotated/rounded shoulders position (especially with arm elevation), this is due to it’s action of internal rotation at the shoulder. Internal rotation of the shoulder decreases Subacromial space which may result in the notorious shoulder impingement with arm elevation. The contract-relax technique is a proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) method of stretching and has been shown to be effecting in restoring range of motion. To properly execute this exercise: -Grab an elevated band, raise arm until you feel restriction and hold for 3-5 seconds. -Resist the band with your Lat’s for 3-5 seconds. -Relax and push deeper into the stretch and repeat. It is important to avoid lumbar extension while doing this, which can be noted with rib flare. The Lat’s limited flexibility is often the culprit of excessive lumbar extension with arm elevation.
