Yes, there is an important connection between bodybuilding and water intake, and staying properly hydrated provides several benefits both in and out of the gym. This includes maximizing strength/energy/endurance levels during training sessions, reducing subcutaneous water retention, lubricating joints and optimizing protein synthesis among other things. Although many people will try to give one concrete guideline for daily water intake, the truth is that it varies hugely from person to person. Overall body weight is one thing, but the amount that you sweat throughout the day also plays a huge role as well. The more you sweat, the more water you’ll need to drink to replace your losses. This can be influenced by the type of training you’re doing (frequency, intensity, duration etc.), the type of climate you live in, your job as well as other factors. So, how much water should you drink each day? Rather than worrying about one exact figure, my suggestion is to simply drink enough water so that your urine is fairly clear and odorless at most points during the day. This will be the best indication that you’re getting enough. If that means 2 liters, 4 liters or 6 liters that’s totally fine as it depends on the individual. Try to get in a good 0.5-1L upon waking up, and then just keep a water bottle with you throughout the day and sip from it periodically. And yes, all liquids count toward your daily total (with the exception of alcohol), though you should be careful about consuming too many calorie-containing beverages as they can add up very quickly in terms of sugar content. When it comes to bodybuilding and water intake, that’s really all there is to it. The question of “how much water should I drink” is highly individual, and you should simply drink enough to meet your own personal needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
