Do you still need a protein on off days? Can I still drink a protein shake on rest days? The answer is YES, you still need to consume a high protein diet EVERYDAY – regardless if you workout on that day or not. Your body is in a constant state of protein turn over and it requires proper nutrition and adequate protein to provide the raw materials needed for recovery to repair and build muscle tissue. While it’s very important to drink a protein shake after your workout to provide easily digestible fast absorbing protein. You can still drink protein shakes on your non workout days to help meet your daily protein needs as well. For muscle growth you should strive to consume 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight daily – whether it’s a workout day or a rest day. And it’s much easier (and cheaper) to meet your daily protein needs if you include protein shakes as part of your diet. My personal favorite protein powder is Iso-Smooth from http://www.BlueStarMuscle.com this contains a blend of fast, medium, and slow digesting protein for a sustained release of amino acids in your system.
