A lot of parents have heard about jaundice, which is a condition newborns can develop after delivery. A newborn isn’t born with jaundice, but it develops with time, because it’s due to a buildup of a chemical called bilirubin in the baby’s blood. If the bilirubin levels get too high, it can cause brain damage, and so for this reason, if we see it climbing and it’s not falling, then we want to intervene and treat the baby so that the baby is as healthy as possible. This treatment involves putting the baby under special lights that helps to break down the bilirubin even faster than the body could do it spontaneously on its own. Some parents have heard that putting their babies in direct sunlight can treat the baby, but avoid doing this, because it’s not effective and it could even be harmful. If you’ve taken your baby home from the hospital and there was no mention of jaundice before, but you’re noticing that the whites of your baby’s eyes are turning yellow, or their little nose, their faces, their trunk, their arms, their legs, call your pediatrician, and they’ll obtain a blood sample to see what the baby’s bilirubin level is, and then determine if treatment is necessary. Now there are times when jaundice spontaneously resolves on its own, but of course, like I mentioned, there are times when it needs to be treated as well. If you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
