Hyperthyroidism is the overactivity of the thyroid. Hypothyroidism is when you experience low thyroid activity. Both of these disorders can cause a lot of problems in the body. The thyroid is responsible for creating hormones. When the body doesn’t communicate correctly with the thyroid, it can cause it to work too hard, or not hard enough. In turn, this can cause your thyroid to create too many or not enough hormones. Your environment has a significant effect on your thyroid glands. The thyroid glands are sensitive to toxins and stress. Eliminating these things from your life may help improve your thyroid function. Your diet also affects your thyroid. Sugar increases your insulin, which can mess up your thyroid gland over time. Lastly, endocrine disruptors are a major cause of thyroid problems. Endocrine disruptors are any chemicals that interfere with the body’s hormone system. This includes: • Hormones in animal products • GMOs • Pesticides in fruits and vegetables • BPA (found in plastics) These can even create nodules and cysts in your thyroid gland, which can cause long-term damage. Organic cruciferous vegetables and sea kelp can help combat these disruptors. What is the cause of your hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism? To figure this out, it can help to remember when you started experiencing symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Did you make changes in your diet or routine around that time? If so, that can help you pinpoint the problem. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 50 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional and natural methods.
