Up to 78 percent of pregnant women do complain of having insomnia at a point in their pregnancy. Certain contributors to insomnia include reflux. You know, when your uterus is full it’s pushing up against your esophageal sphincter causing contents from your stomach to push up. Lower back pain can be causing insomnia, whereas sleep positions can also cause insomnia. There are certain sleep positions, especially if you’re sleeping on your back, that may be a little bit more uncomfortable for you. There are certain sleep disorders that are also found in pregnancy such as restless legs and that can also hamper sleep onset. Certain ways to treat insomnia and pregnancy include exercise. Exercise will help with sleep onset and obtaining deeper levels of sleep at night. Relaxation techniques including meditation, passive stretching, yoga can help with sleep onset as well. And definitely keeping your room a cool environment will help with any body temperature disregulation. Keeping your room cooler will help lower your body temperature which will also help maintain better sleep at night. Medications are generally contraindicated in pregnancies so you want to try to maximize good sleep hygiene and good sleep habits to help you sleep a little bit better at night.
