For the 2019 Chicago Marathon, I’ll be attempting my most ambitious run yet. I’ll be trying to run a marathon in less than three hours. For me, it is a pace I once thought impossible. But at the same time, it is by no means an exceptional feat. At last year’s Chicago Marathon, more than 1300 people were able to run it faster. But that is the beauty of the marathon. No one else matters. Except for a rare blessed few, the marathon is a race between you and the marathon itself. For the 2019 Chicago Marathon, I’ll be less than a month from my 40th birthday. And it is easy to think that my fastest times are already behind me. That I am perhaps asking too much. But the second fastest marathon ever run was completed just weeks ago by a man who is 37. And for the 2020 United States Olympic trials, there are 4 men older than me who have qualified. Now, I know will never run anywhere near as fast as those runners. But that is not what is important. What is important is that someone somewhere can run that fast. Because we are all runners. And what one of us can do, we all can do. And we are not alone. Through our training through our tough workouts our crazy weather days our unexpected highs and our devastating lows. Even if we were training by ourselves in the darkness, Or as part of a team, Our fellow runners have been with us. Every step of the way That’s why we all race the marathon together on the same course at the same time. We are all runners. Together. The marathon is a test of what we as individual runners can do. And it is a test of what we, as runners can do. The marathon lets us know what is possible if we let go of our inhibitions and instead go after the impossible. It lets us know what we can do, no matter how many people tell us we can’t. And no matter what our deepest fears whisper to us. For the marathon, all you have to do, is run faster than you’ve ever run for longer than you’ve ever run before. It is something that sounds just about impossible. But there is strength in numbers. And together, we can do the impossible. Thanks for watching! Leave a comment to let me know you stopped by!
