A new study on testosterone has linked the popular male hormone supplement to heart attacks. Men taking testosterone are as much as three times more likely to have a heart attack. Epidemiologist William Finkle and his colleagues at UCLA reviewed insurance claims on more than 55,000 men to examine the rate of heart attacks within 90 days of starting testosterone. Researchers reported that within 90 days, taking the hormone can more than double the risk of heart attack in men ages 65 and older, as well as nearly triple the risk in younger men with known heart disease. In fact, studies from 2010 and November 2013 reported a 30 percent rise in the risk of stroke, heart attack and death in men aged 60 and older who were prescribed testosterone, compared to those who were not prescribed it. The risk of heart attack for men with pre-existing cardiac issues increased by two- to three-times when testosterone medication was used. Some studies have even suggested that many men receiving testosterone treatments have no medical need for them in the first place. Dr. Steven Nissen, Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic, says, “I am very concerned that widespread use of testosterone supplements without any long-term safety studies is putting millions of men at risk for the most common lethal condition in the United States — heart disease.” Dr. Nissen said not much is known about the effects of hormone replacement therapy. He goes on to say that, “What’s going on is a giant experiment with American men’s health at stake because we don’t have long-term data on the safety of those products.” Opportunities Available Co-counsel marketing, lead conversion, and investment opportunities are available for testosterone cases.
