Most bodybuilding beginners tend to think that building a big chest and big arms are the most important things, but the reality is that these muscle groups are actually a lot smaller and don’t stand out quite as much as most people think. If you really want to build a bigger upper body as effectively as possible, it’s actually the delts and traps that are going to play the largest role. Obviously well-developed pecs and arms are important too, but round “3D” delts paired up with a set of tall/thick traps will make the biggest contribution to your overall upper body size, especially when wearing regular clothes. What’s the most effective way to build big shoulders and traps for that powerful, muscular upper body you’re after? I’ve done several videos on this in the past, and you can use the links above in the “Shoulder And Trap Training” section for more information. For round, wide shoulders that really “pop”, the emphasis needs to be on building up the lateral and posterior heads of the deltoid, especially the lateral head. The lateral head is most effectively hit using properly executed lateral raises, while the posterior head can be trained with bent over lateral raises, face pulls and rear delt rows. For the traps, your best bet is going to be dumbbell shrugs. However, most people do these incorrectly and you’ll want to check out the video above for some very important form cues. Again, every muscle group on the body is important, but if you really want to develop a bigger upper body as fast as possible, the delts and traps are the most important muscle groups in your upper body training plan.
