Your medication Propranolol Propranolol is also known as the brand name: Inderal LA, or Inderal XL. Propranolol comes in 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 mg tablets as well as 60, 80, 120, 160 mg extended release capsules. Propranolol is most commonly used for high blood pressure, arrhythmias, prevention of heart attack, and migraine headache prevention. Propranolol may also be used for anxiety before performing and for tremors. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, propranolol tablets should be taken with food, while the extended release capsules can be taken with food or on an empty stomach but you take it the same way every time, with food or on an empty stomach. Alcohol should be avoided while taking propranolol or used with caution and close monitoring of blood pressure. Standard dosing of propranolol ranges from: 10mg three times daily to 160 mg daily depending on treatment and formulation of propranolol. Some side effects of taking propranolol include cold extremities, dizziness, drowsiness, and the inability to sleep. Propranolol must not be stopped abruptly. The dose must gradually be lowered. While taking propranolol remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if: • You have signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, or hives • You are passing out • You have new or worsening chest pain • Experience hallucinations • You have a heartbeat that doesn’t feel normal • You start taking new medications, vitamins, or supplements.
