Liver enzyme tests can often tell you if there’s something wrong with your liver before any physical symptoms become noticeable. This is important, of course, because you can begin treatment sooner, which could prevent long term liver damage. Your liver contains thousands of enzymes, which are proteins that help maintain a variety of critical chemical and metabolic processes. High enzyme levels indicate a liver condition, disease, or disorder. Common causes of high enzymes may include the following. * Autoimmune disorders of the liver and bile ducts, such as autoimmune hepatitis. * Infections such as viral hepatitis and mononucleosis. * Metabolic liver diseases, such as hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease . * Tumors of the liver or bile ducts. * Diabetes. * Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. * Celiac disease and irritable bowel syndrome. * Certain prescription medications, including statin drugs used to control cholesterol. * Overuse of certain over-the-counter pain medications, particularly acetaminophen. * Excessive use of certain herbal supplements (especially certain Chinese herbal combinations). * High liver enzymes are also often found in persons who are overweight. Regular check ups that include screening tests for high liver enzymes are important. High enzyme level indicators alone don’t usually reveal a specific liver condition or disorder, so additional tests are often needed to narrow down the possibilities. Treatment depends on the cause.
