Mental health and substance use disorders account make up the greatest economic cost of non-communicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries. Together with the InterAcademy Partnership for Health, we convened a workshop to discuss the challenges and priorities for global mental health in the context of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. While progress has been made since the development of the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health initiative in 2011, there is still much to do. We looked at key barriers such as limited access to treatment, lack of funding, skills shortages and stigma, alongside ongoing challenges such as funding for research and capacity-building. The workshop concluded that the Universal Health Coverage agenda offers the best framework in which to develop integrated interventions to prevent, treat and research mental health disorders.
