One example is nodulocystic acne. It involves the formation of cysts and nodules beneath the skin. High levels of testosterone stimulates the prolific release of sebaceous oil which traps debris and blocks skin pores. This creates an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Cysts and nodules develop when the wall of the pores starts to tear. A membrane then develops around the infected area. Antibiotics and topical treatment are not able to address the full range of causes at work. Therefore, they are not likely to succeed. Accutane is a commonly recommended form of treatment. But there are risks of dangerous side effects. In women, for example, the drug can cause birth defects. Various organs can be affected. And even psychiatric disorders may result. There have been quite a few attempts to have Accutane banned within the United States. Many patients and parents are therefore interested in safer options to this acne drug. In this video, Dr. U discusses the fact that his clinic has experienced wonderful success in patients from using photodynamic treatment. One example is the use of the Vbeam laser with Levulan. Levulan is a photosensitizer lotion which is activated by the laser energy. Once this occurs, chemicals are released which address blockages and the presence of bacteria deep within the skin. Vbeam emits a specific wavelength which targets red blood vessels, enabling them to be cleared away by the body’s lymphatic system. Therefore, it can also work to help eliminate redness on the skin caused by the acne. Unlike chemicals, laser energy is highly targeted to the treatment area and will not affect other systems of the body. 819 North Harbor Drive Redondo Beach, CA 90277
