Swollen Liver Warning Signs A swollen liver causes no warning signs of its own. Swelling and enlargement occurs because of some other underlying liver disease, disorder, or condition. Furthermore, there are often no symptoms of swelling or enlargement until significant liver damage has already been done. Signs of liver problems, once they DO appear, tend to be similar across a variety of causes. These symptoms could include any of the following, which usually occur in combination with each other. * Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. This is a classic warning sign of a variety of liver problems. * The sudden appearance of what many people call a “pot belly,” as fluid accumulates in the abdominal area, making the stomach protrude. This fluid build up is called ascites. * Pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. * Muscle aches (also known myalgia) * Nausea * Poor appetite followed by unintentional weight loss * A feeling that your stomach is always full * Ongoing fatigue as liver function degrades, so getting rid of harmful chemicals and cleaning the blood becomes less efficient. The medical name for a swollen liver is hepatomegaly. It’s may also be called an enlarged liver. Regular physical check ups are important because warning signs can only be detected in the early stages by blood tests, a CT scan, or a liver biopsy.
