Low testosterone or “low T” most commonly affects men in their 50s or older. While testosterone naturally decreases with age, it may also happen with certain diseases or conditions. Testosterone is the male sex hormone that not only affects sexual drive, but also affects bone density, heart health, insulin control and metabolism. Lawrence Jenkins, MD, a urologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explains the symptoms and treatment options. Men with low T may have poor energy, difficulty sleeping, reduced endurance and productivity, irritability, depression, confusion and short-term memory loss. Diagnosis requires a blood test and depending on results, the patient may be given a gel, patch, injection or pellets under the skin to replace testosterone. Another option is a pill that essentially tricks the body into making more testosterone. To avoid unnecessary or expensive treatment, Dr. Jenkins urges men to see a medical doctor rather than turning to herbal remedies, over the counter pills or injections to treat their low T.
