You should aim to lose around 2 pounds per week, any faster and you risk burning muscle not fat. In terms of diet, increasing protein intake and reducing carbohydrates has been shown to work extremely well for weight loss. The reason being is that protein increases the feeling of fullness in the stomach which suppresses appetite. And by suppressing appetite you eat less and therefore your calorie intake goes down. Probably the most famous high protein diet is the Atkins diet, which has a tough induction period where carbohydrate intake is severely limited. After that, the more carbohydrates are allowed into the diet gradually. Weight loss of 10 pounds per week is not uncommon with the Atkins diet; but some experts believe most of the initial rapid weight loss may be water. Recent evidence suggests some people may be predisposed genetically to be overweight or obese. However, predisposition doesn’t mean being overweight is inevitable. The person still has to exceed his/her calorie intake to gain weight. And if they can avoid this then there is no reason why they can’t maintain an ideal weight.
