Jaundice is a yellowed discoloration of the skin or eyes that is caused by high bilirubin levels. Bilirubin is actually a yellow pigment that causes this change in the skin or the eyes. And jaundice is not actually a disease but a symptom of high bilirubin levels in the blood. Many infants actually have jaundice and if left untreated it can be serious and cause serious complications. It can be toxic to a baby’s nervous system and cause brain damage. It’s very important that it’s addressed and that the doctor is following up and that treatment plans are followed by the parents who are caring for the child.
