A growing number of adoptive mothers have wanted to breastfeed their babies and it is possible in some situations to some degree. Some others find that they’re only able to produce a little bit of milk and they supplement with formula but this helps them to have the bonding experience that nursing provides. So if you’re wanting to nurse an adoptive baby, call your doctor well ahead of the time when the baby’s going to actually be born and start the process early. It usually takes about 4 weeks and there are medications that can be given to increase the chances that milk will be produced but there are currently no medications on the market that are approved by the FDA that are specifically designed to help induce lactation. Your doctor can talk to you about different medications you can try, talk to you about nipple stimulation, which you’ll have to do a lot of. That involves pumping and allowing the baby to suck at the breast once they’re actually here and, again, the doctor can talk to you in more detail about these things if these are your wishes. If you have any other questions for me, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/intermountainmoms and recommend us to your friends and family, too.
