While steroids may make you muscular and powerful, they can really be bad for your body. Yes, use of anabolic steroid has been linked with a wide range of side effects which may range from acne, breast development in men to heart attack and liver cancer. However, most of these adverse effects are reversible if the abuser quits taking these drugs. These affect your hormonal system by disrupting the normal production of hormones in the body. They may reduce production of sperm and may even shrink your testicles; however, these changes are reversible. There could also be some irreversible changes such as male pattern baldness, breast development in men. These steroids also impact the musculoskeletal system by increasing testosterone levels and other sex hormones. Intake of anabolic steroids may result in artificial high sex hormone levels that can prematurely signal the bones to stop growing. Besides, steroid abuse may lead to cardio vascular diseases including heart attacks and strokes. Use of such steroids may alter the levels of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol in the blood. It may increase the levels of low density lipoprotein and decrease the level of high-density lipoprotein. The changes in the levels of high LDL and low HDL may increase the risk of atherosclerosis, a condition in which fatty substances accumulate inside your arteries and thereby, disrupt the flow of blood. As you may know, if your heart does not receive proper blood supply, the result could be a heart attack. And, if your brain does not get blood supply, the result could be a stroke. Apart from the aforementioned adverse effects, steroids may increase the risk of blood clots that may hinder the flow of blood and damage the muscles of heart.
